Schwa is a sound that can take the place of any vowel. It makes two kinds of relaxed sounds - /ŭ/ and /ĭ/ and is in the unstressed syllable of a word. Schwa makes our speaking sound more natural and is the most common vowel sound in English! Say these words and see if you hear the schwa - banana, camel, fossil.
We’re celebrating National Schwa Day at GAES on Monday, April 7th. April and seven both have schwas!
Students can wear workout wear or pajamas because we’re unstressed like the schwa!
